Ava’s life is . . . complicated.

After all, it’s not every day a girl learns she’s not entirely human, or unlocks hidden powers strong enough to make even the First Race sit up and take notice. After surviving an attempted kidnapping and standing up to the Race’s Ruling Council, Ava Michaels returns to college and what she hopes is a normal life. But Ava quickly realizes that for her, normal may not even exist anymore.

In fact, the Council wants her under their control, and they’re not the only ones. The mysterious Rogues have a plan of their own, and it turns out Ava’s a big part of it, whether she wants to be or not.

On top of that, her new relationship is tested in ways she never expected. Her boyfriend, Caleb Foster, has disappeared—accused of betraying the Race—and Ava herself stands implicated in a crime she didn’t commit.

Clearing their names will mean uncovering a web of deceit and intrigue with Ava woven right in the center. To unravel the strands, she joins forces with some unlikely allies; a Protector who once haunted her nightmares, a young girl with secrets as unexpected as Ava’s, and a group of rebel Guardians who have their own fight against the Council.

Together they stand in a battle to find the truth, bring Caleb home, and secure Ava’s freedom—not to mention save her life.

What-I-ThoughtI really enjoyed reading More, the first book in this series! I only just reread what I had written about the first book in my review and my last sentence was, and I quote: “More goes out with a bang. Or rather ‘Ava’ goes out with a bang! Nothing better than a heroine that knows how to kick some ass!”

Because of the way the first book ended I was really excited to read The Guardians. Immediately after finishing More I requested The Guardians on NetGalley after contacting the author about the Blog Tour that they were still looking bloggers for. I got approved, for the book as well as the Tour. I could barely control my excitement and wanted to start reading immediately. But then I decided to wait. The Blog Tour wasn’t happening until November and I wanted to post my review not too long before the Blog Tour made an appearance on my blog. I’ll admit that it took some self-control, but here we finally are!

I finished this book yesterday. I started reading yesterday and finished it a few hours later. Sequels kinda give me the creeps, because they either rock or they disappoint. A well deserved round of applause for T.M. Franklin, because I think that I liked the Guardians even better than its predecessor!

I may or may not have mentioned that the first book held a good amount of  character development. The second book holds the same well-developed characters, but that’s not where it stops. Ava is still the same strong minded girl, and through the course of this story she learns a lot about herself. About her newfound abilities but also about her heritage.

The character development isn’t limited to her though! Remember Tiernan from the first book? Yeah… I wasn’t a very big fan of that guy. His role in the Guardians has changed considerably though. His role in the story is bigger and because of that you get to know him better. Turns out there’s a pretty great guy underneath that gruff and scary exterior. You get to know a bit about his past, which made me understand and like him that much better. He’s sharp and witty. and there was lots of quick and fun banter going on between Ava and Tiernan (New secret crush alert!).

The plot was better in the sequel and there’s some twists and turns you don’t see coming until they slap you straight in the face. And I’m talking about bitch-slap in the face.

The romance between Ava and Caleb was put on hold a bit. Mainly because Caleb needed saving. There was few time for romance, the bits we do get to see of their relationship are steamy!

This sequel is fast paced and action-packed, with plot twists that’ll have you scraping your jaw of the floor! A great read, that I finished way too soon (seriously, I desperately need that third book!). The only thing I hope to see different in the next instalment is more of a bond and development in Ava and Caleb’s relationship!

Those 4 stars I gave The Guardians are well deserved and I hope the get my hands on that third book sooner rather than later!!
